Sanatorio de Abades

The Sanatorio de Abades, located in the coastal area of Abades, Tenerife, is an abandoned hospital complex steeped in mystery and historical intrigue. The project was initiated in the 1940s during the Spanish dictatorship of Franco. Its original purpose was to serve as a leprosy hospital (or leprosarium) to treat patients with leprosy in isolation. By the time the hospital was planned, medical advances and the availability of treatments for leprosy made the facility unnecessary. Construction was halted in the 1950s before it was completed.
